Biochemical analysis of gallstones

Abstract: Gallstone disease is the most common surgical problem encountered by general surgeons and constitutes the major portion of abdominal surgery in our practice. Gallstones are formed by super saturation of cholesterol in bile in the presence of other enucleating factors and calcium salts of bilirubin. In understanding the gallstone disease the knowledge of biochemical composition of gallstone is of huge importance. Broadly classified in 3 types (based on cholesterol content) that is cholesterol stone, mixed stone and pigment stone.
